Isabella (Bella) Swan decides to move from sunny Phoenix to misty Forks, Washington to live with her father after 14 years of living with her mother. She doesn’t really want to go, she loves Phoenix and hates cold rainy Forks, but her mother has a new paramour and she doesn’t want to get in the middle of that either. So, she has to make the best of her options.

Luckily, her father has bought her a grand old truck, because fitting in at a new school is not easy. She does get involved with a good crowd, but a gorgeous hunk named Edward Cullen, who is part of a puzzling family, somehow mesmerizes her as soon as she sees him.

As time progresses, she finds herself more and more attracted to Edward as he seems to be increasingly repelled by her presence. When an old family acquaintance tells her that Edward and his family are vampires, albeit non-human eaters, she becomes even more obsessed by him.

When he decides to turn toward her, she is thrilled and terrified at the same time. His first touch, his first kiss, almost literally blows her away. Meanwhile, some marauding vampires discover her with Edward and his family and decide to track and destroy her.

At the same time she decides that becoming a vampire is the only way to stay with Edward, the tracker finds and bites her, forcing Edward to decide to save her life while leaving her human.

The compelling plot of this story, the dilemma of being a human but loving a vampire, carries the reader through the book on wings. The equally strong portrayal of all the senses involved in this romance makes it a vivid story even for a non-reader of romances.
